TomTom helps you find the cheapest gas

Monday, December 21, 2009

With gas prices hovering around $4 per gallon, TomTom's new "Fuel Prices" GPS service is looking pretty darn appealing to road warriors.

In case you missed the official announcement earlier this year, supported TomTom GPS navigation units -- namely, the Go 920 and Go 920T -- work with the company's new fuel pricing service, which allows the driver to find the cheapest gas on their route within a 30-mile radius.

Specifically, this yearly ($14.95) service sends U.S. gas price information to a driver's GPS unit when a Bluetooth phone (with data plan) is nearby. This information is also sent to TomTom Home, computer software for Windows PCs and Macs that lets you personalize the type of information displayed on your synchronized GPS unit.

Users can also select which type of gas you’d like tracked (regular, midgrade, and premium) as well as diesel. Data, which is updated every four hours, is supplied to TomTom by OPIS, a leading source of petroleum pricing received through credit card transactions from nearly 120,000 gas station owners.
