Next-generation Beatlemania

Sunday, May 09, 2010

The Fab Four have been longtime holdouts for digital distribution. But now their catalog will become available, although not from sources like iTunes or any other online store. Instead, MTV Games and Apple Corps announced a The Beatles video game not unlike the popular Rock Band series.

This new partnership between Apple Corps and Harmonix (a division of MTV Games responsible for creating the Rock Band phenomenon) represents the first time The Beatles music will be available in video game. While not officially titled “Rock Band: The Beatles” (not yet, anyway), this new game was conceived with input from Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, along with Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison. Plus, Giles Martin, co-producer of The Beatles LOVE show in Las Vegas, will lend his expertise as music producer on this ambitious project.

“The project is a fun idea, which broadens the appeal of The Beatles and their music. I like people having the opportunity to get to know the music from the inside out,” McCartney said in a statement.

“The Beatles continue to evolve with the passing of time, and how wonderful that The Beatles’ legacy will find its natural progression into the 21st century through the computerized world we live in,” Starr said in the statement. “Let the games commence.”
