How to create a free MP3 ringtone for your BlackBerry

Monday, February 09, 2009

Want to change your BlackBerry’s ringtone to your favorite song but don’t want to pay your carrier for the clip? Getting ringtones for free is easier than you think.

For example, say you can’t stop singing Lady GaGa’s “Just Dance,” which is currently at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Or maybe you’re partial to classic rock, ‘70s funk, or classical music.

Regardless, BlackBerry owners whose phones can play MP3s can easily turn their favorite ditty into a ringtone that will play when someone calls. Most people will pay a few dollars to their cell carrier for the audio clip, but you don’t need to. Here’s how to do it yourself:

1. First, get the song on your phone by syncing your BlackBerry with your PC. Simply open up the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, click “Media,” and select the songs you’d like to copy over to your BlackBerry. Alternatively, you can simply drag and drop songs over to the microSD card in Windows Explorer.

2. Disconnect the BlackBerry. On your phone, open up your media player, select “Music,” and then highlight the song you want to use as a ringtone.

3. Now press the “Options” button on your BlackBerry (it’s the button with seven little dots on it). One of your options is “Set as Ringtone.” Select this.

That’s a wrap. Easy, huh?
