Go big with new Archos media player

Monday, December 15, 2008

If you believe capacity matters, you won't be disappointed with Archos' latest unveiling.

Best known for its portable media players, the Denver-based company recently announced that its latest Archos 7 Internet Media Tablet can be purchased with a 320 gigabyte (GB) hard drive, offering the largest capacity of any hand-held media player.

Enough for 300 full-length movies, thousands of songs, or millions of photos, this 7-inch touch-screen and Wi-Fi-enabled device is powered by the new ARM Cortex superscalar microprocessor and includes a fast full HTML browser (with support for Flash 9 video), new email application, and MSN IM software for real-time chatting.

As with past Archos products, a free plug-in lets users stream thousands of online radio stations and Web TV channels. Or if you prefer, an optional DVR (digital video recorder) station accessory can dock the Archos and record TV shows and movies when connected to a satellite or cable box, which you can then take with you to go.

Depending on the application, the company claims the Archos 7 battery can last up to 39 hours between charges.

Available now at Dell, Amazon, Best Buy, and Archos' Web site, the Archos 7 costs $449.99 for the 160 GB model and $549.99 for the 320 GB model.
